The TryAngle scheme is run by Tim Holgate, a stalwart for the Tring Rugby Club 1st team, who has recruited a team of excellent and highly qualified coaches to teach basic skills and ‘tag’ rugby to over 600 primary school children in and around Tring, as part of his coaching company “Winning Try”.

Sponsorship for TryAngle’s 2008-9 coaching program in local schools has been generously provided by The Akeman. For more details please click here.

TryAngle also organises a number of after school clubs in addition to the in-curriculum based activities, culminating in the TryAngle Tournament, held every year at Tring Rugby Club.

Tryangle Schools Tag Rugby Festival 2008

Featuring 12 players from the Dacorum Under 11s tag teams, the TryAngle festival was at its highest standard so far. Now in its 4th year, the annual Tag Rugby Festival featured 21 primary schools from Tring and surrounding villages. This year the coaching was carried out by Tim Holgate and Dominic Bowers, both members of Tring RUFC’s first team squad.  There were three tournaments at the festival at levels Year 4, 5 and 6.

In the Year 4 tournament the stand out side were Long Marston with Oliver Beeny creating many scoring opportunities and try-saving tags - he is definitely one to watch for the future. In the final, Aldbury put up a brave fight, but Long Marston came away as the Winners.

In the Year 5 tournament, Grove A played Grove B for a place in the final against Long Marston. Once again, though, Long Marston were string, with Robbie Cogger pulling the strings, and won by 6 tries to 4.

In year 6 it was a similar story with Long Marston entering their 3rd Final of the day.  This time they were to play St Bartholomews. With district players from each side it was Josh Freestone from Long Marston who showed great running lines and support play to break down the previously strong defence from St Barts.  Long Marston made it 3 finals from 3 attempts and were overall winners of the Festival. Many congratulations to them. Peter Borg- Neal, a Trustee of the Ilex Charitable Trust, was on hand to present the awards. Peter said ' "I was incredibly impressed by the standard of rugby on show. This was the fourth year of the programme and the quality just gets better and better. Well done the coaches - and of course to the children."

Summing up, Tim Holgate commented 'The tournament illustrated just how good tag rugby is in Tring, with many aspiring youngsters getting an insight into the game. The Long Marston sides had 2 or 3 Tring Rugby Club players in their teams and it proved to be the difference. The future for rugby in Tring looks very good.”
